Why are disposable high temperature batteries used in MWD applications? Not using rechargeable batteries?

1. Working environment:The downhole environment encountered during drilling is extremely harsh, with high temperatures and pressure, as well as exposure to mud, drill cuttings, and corrosive fluids. This makes it difficult for rechargeable batteries to survive and maintain their performance.

2. Reliability: Disposable high-temperature batteries provide reliable and stable power for the MWD system. It is less likely to malfunction or degrade during use. Essential for reliable data transfer and accurate measurements.

3. Cost: Considering the equipment cost required for rechargeable batteries, maintenance costs and the impact on battery performance and life in harsh underground environments, disposable high temperature is more cost-effective than rechargeable batteries.

4. Safety: Rechargeable batteries may have risks such as thermal runaway or short circuit. In MWD applications, battery failure can have serious consequences such as loss of data or even damage to drilling equipment. Disposable high temperature batteries are safer than rechargeable batteries.

For the above reasons, disposable high-temperature batteries are more suitable for MWD (Wireless Measurement While Drilling) downhole applications than rechargeable batteries.
