How does Smart Pipeline Inspection Gauges (PIG) work?

The working method of Smart Pipeline Inspection Gauges (Smart PIG for short) can be briefly summarized as the following steps:

Smart PIG is first deployed into the pipeline to be inspected and activated at the pipeline entrance. It can enter the pipeline in various ways, such as by pressure, fluid push or mechanical assistance.

Once the Smart PIG enters the pipeline, it begins to locate and navigate through the internal navigation system. These navigation systems can use a variety of technologies such as Global Positioning System (GPS), Inertial Navigation System (INS), Geomagnetic Navigation, etc. Through these systems, Smart PIG is able to determine its own position in the pipe and adjust its direction of movement accordingly.

Smart PIG is equipped with various sensors and instruments to collect data about the pipeline, including pressure, flow, temperature, corrosion degree, wall thickness, etc. inside the pipeline. It is also possible to capture images and geometric information inside the pipeline through cameras or laser scanners, and then transmit the data to external data storage devices through internal storage or wireless communication.

Data Analysis and Evaluation: Once data is collected and transmitted, it can be analyzed and evaluated.

When Smart PIG completes the detection task of the pipeline, it will reach the pipeline exit or a specific recycling point.
