What is a pig detector?

A pig detector is a device used in the oil and gas industry to detect and track the movement of pipeline cleaning equipment “pigs” in pipelines. A pig is a cylindrical device inserted into a pipeline and propelled through it using fluid pressure or other means. They are used to clean and maintain pipelines, remove debris and deposits, and inspect pipelines for damage or corrosion.

The pig detector can provide real-time information about the position, movement speed, and key points passing through the pipeline of the pig. This information can be used to monitor the progress of the pig in the pipeline, detect any obstacles or damage in the pipeline, and plan maintenance and cleaning activities.

When a pig passes through a pipeline, it generates a magnetic field. The magnetic sensor of the pig detector detects the magnetic field and sends a signal to the signal processing unit. Then, the signal processing unit analyzes the signal and determines the position and direction of movement of the pig.

Pig detectors are usually installed at pipeline access points, such as valves or pig launchers. It consists of a magnetic sensor sensitive to the magnetic field generated by the pig, a signal processing unit, and an alarm or display system.
